Chateau

The Pardubice Chateau dominates the city. In many respects it is an exceptional monument that began its existence under the rule of the Lords of Pernštejn at the turn of the 16th century. In Bohemia you will not find any parallel to its uniquely preserved original layout of a flat-country water castle closed from the surrounding world with huge earth walls, at the same time providing the comfort of a large Renaissance chateau.

Vast fragments of monumental wall painting decorations, some of the oldest Renaissance wall paintings in Bohemia, have been preserved in the chateau interior, especially in the Knights Halls, and the original stone decorated portals, vaults, window and mantelpiece jambs and painted Renaissance lacunar ceilings are found there.

The Chateau is the seat of the East Bohemian Museum and the East Bohemian Gallery  A few permanent exhibitions which are really worth seeing, including the largest Central European Collection of Picture Postcards – Orbis Pictus, and a unique Collection of Czech Atelier Glass of the 20th Century, are installed here, a valuable Collection of Weapons is also exhibited here and a Numismatic Collection has been newly opened as well. The Knights Halls and the Chateau Yard are premises where social events, theatre performances and concerts often take place.
