In Pardubice you can find a number of buildings designed by well-known architects of the 20th century. The Square of the Republic (náměstí Republiky) is directly their open-air museum. The front part is formed by the theatre designed by Antonín Balšánek, which was built in the period from 1906 to 1909. Next to the Green Gate (Zelená brána), the building of the Town Savings Bank, now Czech Savings Bank, designed by František Roith, was built in the years 1914 to 1917.
Anglobanka, now Comercial bank, was built according to the design prepared by Josef Gočár on the other side of the Green Gate (in the years 1924 and 1925). The former Grand Hotel, now the Commercial Centre Grand, on the other side of the square is also Gočár’s work. It was opened in 1931.
The building of the District Office, formerly housing the general headquarters of post and telegraph, is located at the corner of the square next to the theatre; it was built in 1925. It was designed by the architect Ladislav Machoň who created the form of the whole of Smetana Square (Smetanovo náměstí) with the building of the Grammar School and residential buildings. He is also the author of the General Post Office and the Passage in the Peace Avenue (třída Míru).
The Square of the Republic ends, in the direction to the Chateau, by the former Industrial Museum designed by the architect Karel Řepa in 1931, now it is the Secondary School of Food Processing Technologies. Řepa designed a number of buildings in the city. The culmination of his life’s was the Central Railway Station which he designed together with Josef Danda. It was opened in 1958.
Unique buildings include the mills designed by Josef Gočár on the right bank of the Chrudimka river and the Crematorium designed by Pavel Janák in the Main Cemetery in Pardubice.
The building of CSOB Insurance Office designed by the architect Soběslav Macas, which was opened in the last year of the 20th century, is also a structure that cannot be overlooked. Polyfunctional building Magnum, standing on the place of famous former hotel Vesela, belongs to the remarkable buildings of last years as well.
