TThe second of the duo of twin towns lies on the river Elbe approximately 15 km east of Madgeburg in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt. Besides the Elbe the town of Schönebeck, with its population of fifty thousand, has a number of other things in common with Pardubice, namely fertile Elbe plains, a town hall building of the same age, and close to a spa.
The spa near Schönebeck is called Bad Salzelmen and is famous not only for spa tourism but also for mining and production of salt. Breathing the salt enriched air and bathing in tepid salty water has excellent medicinal benefits. The Spa Festival takes place in the Schönebeck Spa Park each year to celebrate famous times past. It is a celebration of music, dance, songs, and entertainment and also incorporates an open-air fair.
A new twin town agreement was signed in 1993, however mutual relations have been in existence for much longer. Many different friendships and relationships have developed over the years.
