Note:

between the years 1961–2001 the data is taken from a census of people and households (i.e. not as of 31.12., but as of the date of the census in the respective year), all data from each census has been converted to the territorial structure of the cities as of 1. 3. 2001 (i.e. the date of the last census)
in 2002 and 2003 data is taken from annual demographic balances, i.e. as of 31.12. of the given year
from 2001 inclusive foreigners with long-term residency are also included in the overall population figure

Pardubice is a city with a significant administrative, housing, service-oriented, and manufacturing role within the Hradec Králové – Pardubice agglomeration. As of 31.12.2003 there were 88,741 inhabitants living in Pardubice, of which 49.1 % males and 50.9 % females. This ranks Pardubice as the tenth largest city in the Czech Republic.
The number of inhabitants of Pardubice increased relatively quickly at the beginning of the 19th century largely in reaction to the growth in industry which saw a boom as the town was connected to the Prague - Česká Třebová main railway line. However, the local population has been decreasing since 1993.

Influences on development of the population of Pardubice:
  • Situated on an important rail junction
  • One of the centres of the Hradec Králové – Pardubice agglomeration
  • High intensity of industry and transport
  • Lower quality atmosphere, work opportunities
  • University town – historic town
  • Large number of cultural monuments, tourist attraction

* population density calculated from an area of 7771 ha in each year
Note: between the years 1950–1992 the data is taken from a census of people and households (converted to the territorial structure of the city as of 1. 3. 2001)

In the following years data is taken from the annual demographic balance (converted to the territorial structure of the city)
Data for 2001 is taken from demographic balance figures; or data from the census can be used (90,668). Over the years a number of territorial changes took place (e.g. the annexation of Černá za Bory, Lány na Důlku, and the detachment of Spojil and Srnojedy). Due to the fact that table 2 contains a figure for the population converted to the current territorial structure of the city we should calculate population density based on the current area (7771 ha) in all years. This then gives us comparable figures (see Density). The “contemporary” area of the town has been left in the column “Area” indicating the size in the given year.
In 1993 the number of inhabitants including the municipality of Srnojedy totalled 95,056, and following the detachment of Srnojedy totalled 94,820.

Note: between the years 1950–1991 the data is taken from a census of people and households (converted to the territorial structure of the city as of 1. 3. 2001)
In the following years data is taken from the annual demographic balance.  (number of inhabitants in the region according to the 2001 census: 160,987)
Comparing the number of inhabitants of Pardubice with those in the region we see a concentration of inhabitants in the regional city up until 1991. From this time onwards the ratio of inhabitants in the city to those in the region has dropped slightly thanks to housing in neighbouring villages becoming more accessible.
Up until 1940 Pardubice was made up of the central area known as the White Suburb (Bílé předměstí). Pardubičky and Dubina had joined by 1954, followed by Doubravice, Ohrazenice, Polabiny, Semtín, Popkovice and Rosice by 1960, Trnová, Svítkov and Srnojedy by 1964, Dražkovice, Nemošice, Mnětice, Drozdice, Černá za Bory, Spojil and Staré Čívice by 1976 and finally Lány na Důlku and Opočínek by 1986. In 1991 Cihelna was established and Spojil was detached, and in 1993 Srnojedy was detached. At present the administrative urban area of Pardubice consists of 19 cadastral districts covering a total area of 7772 ha.

Population migration

From table No. 8 it is clear that there is a gradual decline in the number of inhabitants of Pardubice, and thus an ageing of the population. This trend is appearing across the Czech Republic owing to a greater number of deaths than births and a reduction in the number of working age inhabitants.
However, in 1997, for the first time in four years, a greater number of births were registered than deaths. We can also see a greater number of people moving away from the city than moving into the city.
